Hutchinson, Kan. -- Hutchinson firefighters were called to the scene of a trailer fire Saturday morning.
It happened around 11:30 a.m. in the 7300 block of North K-61 Highway. Deputy Fire Chief Doug Hanen says when crews arrived, they found a trailer that was loaded with 40 large square hay bales, with approximately 1/3 of the rear of the trailer on fire.
Firefighters with the help of crews from the Kansas Department of Transportation worked to spread out the hay so the fire could be fully extinguished. It took about 30 minutes to bring under control, but crews remained on scene for about two hours.
The cause appears to be a bad ball bearing in one of the rear wheels. Damage is estimated at $4,000, with 21 bales destroyed.
Reno County Sheriff's Deputies and Kansas Highway Patrol troopers closed down K-61 from 85th to 56th Avenues.
