TOPEKA, Kan. - A veteran Topeka attorney has filed to run for Kansas attorney general as a Democrat, becoming the first potential challenger this year for Republican incumbent Derek Schmidt.

A.J. Kotich said he filed the necessary paperwork Thursday to get on the ballot in the Aug. 5 primary election. However, no other Democrats have publicly expressed an interest in the race.

Kotich has a private legal practice, but he served as chief counsel for the state departments of Labor and Administration during the administrations of both Democratic and Republican governors. He also is a former assistant attorney general.

Schmidt hasn't made a formal announcement about his plans, but he's expected to seek a second, four-year term.
