Three people were taken to Salina hospital after a house fire broke out in the middle of the night.

It happened in the 500 block of N. 13th around 1:46 a.m. Friday.

Crews arrived to find heavy smoke and fire coming from the home. First responders found two people in the alley, who managed to escape the flames. They were taken to the hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation and minor burns.

A firefighter was also transported to the hospital for evaluation, but was released a short time later.

Officials said personal belonging packed inside the home made it difficult for crews to battle the blaze.

Investigators said the home had been without natural gas services since 2008. The homeowner had been using space heaters and extension cords to heat the home. However the exact cause of the fire has not been determined.
