UPDATE: Friday, April 13, 2012
A teenager has died after an officer-involved shooting in west Wichita overnight.
It happened in the 1200 block of W. Crawford around 4:45 a.m. Friday. Officers responded to the report of an armed residential robbery.
Deputy Chief Terri Moses said officers saw the suspects inside the house upon arrival. Three suspects ran from the home when officers approached them. Officers told the suspects to stop and drop their weapons, but Moses said the suspects did not comply with authorities’ demands.
Officers opened fire, hitting all three suspects. A 17-year-old man died as a result. Moses said it is unclear whether the suspects returned fire.
A 19-year-old man and a 20-year-old man were taken to the hospital with critical injuries. Hospital officials said the men have since been upgraded to fair condition. Officers are still looking for a fourth suspect. A description has not been released.
Moses said it appears the incident was not a random robbery. Eight people, including a two-year-old, were inside the home at the time.
The Kansas Bureau of Investigation and the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office is assisting with the investigation. The officers who fired the shots have been placed on administrative leave.
No names have been released at this time. Police will hold another news conference at 3:30 p.m. after further investigation.
