WICHITA, Kan. — The man accused of killing three people at a home in southeast Wichita earlier this week has been formally charged.
Vinh Van Nguyen, 41, appeared in court via jail video feed Friday afternoon in connection to murder of three people at a home in the 2200 block of South Beech just after midnight Tuesday.
Nguyen is accused of killing his girlfriend, 45-year-old Tuyet Huynh, along with her daughter, 20-year-old Trinh Pham, and son-in-law, 21-year-old Sean Pham.
During the court hearing, Nguyen was charged with capital murder, or in the alternative, three counts of first degree murder. The judge appointed the death penalty defense unit to represent Nguyen, but prosecutors have not announced if they will seek the death penalty.
Because of a language barrier, an attorney is set to meet with Nguyen early next week to help him better understand the charges he's facing.
Bond is set at $2 million. A preliminary hearing was scheduled for July 10.

Three people are dead following an early morning shooting in southeast Wichita.
Shortly after midnight Tuesday, a woman called 911 from the basement of a home in the 2200 block of South Beech saying someone was shooting a gun upstairs.
When officers arrived minutes later, they surrounded the home. They approached, looking in the windows, and saw two people lying on the floor in different parts of the home.
Officers then forced entry and found a man in the master bedroom next to the body of a woman. He was taken into custody.
Another body was found in the hallway of the ground floor.
When officers entered the basement, they found the body of a 20-year-old woman. Her five-month-old son was found unharmed next to her. Police say she called 911 before she was shot.
The suspect, 41-year-old Vinh Van Nguyen, was taken in for questioning then booked for capital murder. Police recovered one weapon at the scene.
Police identified the woman found dead in the bedroom as 45-year-old Tuyet Huynh, the homeowner. Officers describe the man who was arrested as Huynh's boyfriend.
Her daughter, who was found dead in the basement, was identified as 20-year-old Trinh Pham. The third victim, who was found in the hallway, was Pham's husband, 21-year-old Sean Pham.
Police say the suspect and the victims all lived at the home. Huynh also had another child who lived there, but that she was out of town with other family. The five-month-old boy is now under the care of other family members.
Police said there were no previous cases involving domestic violence or any other criminal activity at that residence.
Formal charges against Nguyen could be filed later this week. His bond is set at $2 million.
A fund has been set up to help the family with funeral and other expenses. For more information or to donate, click here.
