WICHITA, Kan. -- Thousands of Wichitans were left without power late Sunday morning and into the early afternoon.

The outage was reported at around 11:30 a.m. after dispatchers say a power pole in the 1400 block of North Emporia had broken and caught fire. The fire was quickly extinguished.

One dispatch supervisor said she heard a loud "boom" before the power went out, but she was unclear on the cause.

At the height of the outage around 11:45, Westar reported about 6,500 had lost power near the riverside area and north to about 21st Street. Some traffic lights were also affected.

At 12:40 p.m., the number of outages was down to about 200 for all of Sedgwick County.

We will continue to stay in contact with Westar and bring you updates as they become available.
