Since January 15, residents in Cowley County have reported nine burglaries. Two were reported on Tuesday near Winfield Lake.

Most of the burglaries have occurred in the daytime and with forced entry into the homes. The thieves are targeting homes that are isolated and in the rural and northern part the county.

"It's a common occurrence pretty much everywhere. It's kind of something that runs in spurts. We get a few here and then we get a quiet time. Then, it'll pick up again," said Jeff Moore, Cowley County Undersheriff.

Thieves have taken firearms, electronic equipment, computers, hand tools, and jewelry.

The Sheriff's Office is recommending that residents report vehicles unknown to the area and report suspicious people who knock on doors asking for directions.

"When the homeowners let them in, they're allowed to see what's inside the house. Sometimes, that's a clue for them to come back later on and take what they want," said Moore.

Deputies believe some, if not the majority, are connected to the same suspects.
