Wichita Police officers are urging neighbors to be on the lookout for thieves who are taking entire air conditioning units from vacant homes.
"We're always concerned whenever we see thefts that are on the rise and AC units, because of the metal and the fact that they want to get the metal out of them, it is a concern for us," said Lt. Doug Nolte, Wichita Police.
On Tuesday, there were three reports of units that were taken from houses that are listed as for sale and/or vacant.
"I feel violated because I've lived here since the '50s and used to be such a safe neighborhood. I don't feel that way anymore," said Charlotte Buckmaster, whose neighbor was one of the victims of this crime trend.
Police are urging neighbors to report any suspicious people and cars that are at vacant.
Some realtors said they check on their listings about once a week and try to alert neighbors of empty houses.
"We all try to watch each others houses and that's about all we can do," said Buckmaster.
