UPDATE:

Police released new details Monday in a burglary attempt that led to a shooting in far west Wichita late last week.

It happened Friday afternoon in the 1000 block of North Firefly Circle.

Police say a 25-year-old man who lives at the home heard someone trying to break in through the front door. The suspect was unsuccessful, then moved to the back sliding glass door. The resident told officers he retrieved a gun, and fired through the glass door. The suspect ran to a car where others were waiting and fled.

Police stopped the car a short time later near Towne West Mall. A 22-year-old suspect was taken to a Wichita hospital with a gunshot wound to the head. Two others in the car, a 19-year-old man and a 19-year-old woman, were also arrested.

Police believe the trio were also responsible for a burglary earlier in the day near 21st Street North and 143rd Street East.

Police said the resident was protecting his property, and charges are not expected to be filed.

UPDATE:

Police say that three suspects, one of whom was shot, in a burglary attempt in west Wichita Friday afternoon had just committed a burglary near Andover before hitting the home on the west side.

Sgt. Bruce Watts said officers were at the scene of the first burglary at 21st Street North and 143rd Street East.

"We didn't catch them, and they fled out west and hit a house out west," he said.

That's when the resident of the west Wichita home, near Central and 119th Street West, told officers he shot at someone trying to break in.

A few minutes later, another officer spotted a car matching the description of one seen leaving the scene and he, along with other officers, pulled the car over at Maple and Elder.

There were three people inside the car, including someone suffering from a gunshot wound. He was taken to an area hospital in serious condition. The two additional suspects were jailed in lieu of $75,000 bond each. Their names have not been released.

Watts said a witness to the burglary near Andover told police the car used was the same used in the attempt on Firefly.

A man is seriously wounded after being shot during a possible burglary attempt in far west Wichita.

Officers were called to the report of a burglary with shots fired shortly after 1:30 Friday afternoon in the 1000 block of North Firefly Circle. That's near Central and 119th Street West.

A resident of the home, the adult son of the homeowner, told officers he shot at someone trying to break in, but was unsure if he hit him.

Neighbors in general were happy an attempted burglary was stopped by gun-packing resident.

Margie Parker says, "They should think twice before they break into someone's house in this neighborhood."

Another neighbor says there's been five recent burglaries in the area and hopes this will deter other burglars.

Police Lt. Brian White says it's believed the burglars were also armed. He says police will continue to investigate all the facts and circumstances of the case but says their initial belief is that the resident shot in self defense.
