A stolen car over the weekend led to two arrests for a string of other car burglaries in Cowley County.
On Sunday, officers were notified of a possible stolen vehicle from the Derby area. The person who reported the theft was a parent of one of the alleged suspects.
Officers from the Arkansas City Police Department later found the vehicle in the parking lot of the Cowley College campus. They located two suspects, who are roommates, in one of the dorm rooms.
Through the investigation, officers discovered other stolen property. They determined that after taking the car from Derby, the suspects allegedly drove around Ark City and burglarized about eight vehicles. Those crimes took place in the 200 and 300 blocks of 3rd, 4th and 5th Streets.
David Greer's F250 truck was one of those vehicles burglarized. Greer was on his way out to help a friend when he found his truck had been ransacked
"I found the inside of my vehicle looking like Mardis Gras threw up in it," Greer said. "I have to admit I wasn't really a happy camper."
He says the suspects took his jazz and bluegrass CD's, XM radio, and other little things.
"They are looking at jail time for what, you know? Fifty dollars worth of junk? It's foolish," Greer said.
Police arrested Garrick Gross and Cody Anderson for felony theft, four counts of burglary, four counts of misdemeanor theft and three counts of criminal trespass. Anderson is also facing one count of consumption of alcohol by a minor. Both are being held at the Cowley County Jail on a bond of almost $25,000 each. Neither man has yet been formally charged.
Police say the men were intoxicated during the crime. They were still intoxicated when police arrested them. Police say they have reason to believe the driver was intoxicated when he drove the stolen vehicle from Derby to Arkansas City.
Greer and his neighbors say it's a real shame that these students have cost themselves so much with one night of bad decisions.
"College education or not, this will follow them," Greer said.
