UPDATE: Tuesday, April 17, 2012

Spirit Aerosystems employees are on an “on-call basis” through the week, as the aviation company continues to recover from a weekend tornado.

In a press release, CEO Jeff Turner said if employees do not receive a call, they should not report to work.

Turner said roofing repairs began Tuesday, three days after a mile-wide tornado destroyed most of the campus. Power is restored to the site, while natural gas and compressed air will be turned back on by priority.

The company is working on an action plan to make the site safe for production, but still expects to make shipments to customers this week.

Employees are encouraged to call the information line at 316-523-6405. Regular updates are also available at Spirit Aerosystems
and on Twitter @SpiritAero. Workers may also access employee emails via web email.

UPDATE: Monday, April 16, 2012

Spirit AeroSystems has established an Employee Information Line at 316-523-6405. Employees can call this number to receive the latest information regarding returning to work.

The information will be updated daily. Individuals are urged to try again if the line is busy.

Electricity is still out at the machinists union's lodge building next to Spirit AeroSystems. Machinist Union District 70 President Steve Rooney encourages Spirit machinists to call the district's lodge where the locals officers are currently working with questions concerning their work at Spirit.

UPDATE: Monday, April 16, 2012

There's growing confidence that workers at Spirit AeroSystems, Wichita's largest employer, could be back on the job soon, despite the damage done by Saturday's tornado. Company leaders say many areas are nearly ready to resume production but others still need repairs.

Some of Spirit's buildings suffered major damage in Saturday's storm, but CEO Jeff Turner says some major factory areas were unscathed by the tornado and are ready for work to resume. Other areas have only minor damage.

"We don't have any of our major production facilities that are ruined. We've got several of them that we're going to have to do some temporary work to make sure we can keep production flowing," said Turner. "The really good news is that the product looks to be in really good shape. The machine tools and some of the equipment look to be in really good shape."

Turner says Spirit might even be ready to ship a 737 fuselage or two and other parts by week's end, but they won't be up to full production for awhile. He says they first must make sure all areas are safe for employees and have utilities and part supplies. Power continues to be restored in phases.

No monetary damage estimate is available at this time. Turner says their insurance carriers are still on site surveying damage.

Turner says it's still uncertain whether employees will be paid while not at work. He says it's something that will be addressed soon.

Spirit's email and internal phone system are expected to be on line Monday night, as well as power to engineers' computers and floor controls. Overall operations will remain closed on Tuesday.

Spirit Aerosystems' CEO said no major production areas were ruined when a tornado struck the company's Wichita facility.

Operations have been suspended since the tornado hit late Saturday.

Jeff Turner briefed reporters on the plant's status this afternoon. Turner said electrical service has been restored, but the key is to make the infrastructure safe before returning to production.

Turner said they are telling most suppliers to keep building, but wait to ship. He said the production facility looks very good, except for debris, and Spirit may be able to ship products soon.
