WICHITA, Kan. — Three crashes in a 24-hour period in south Kansas have killed one person, and injured two others.
The death occurred Wednesday afternoon on K-2 in Barber County. State troopers say Shattuck, Oklahoma resident Jerry Schoenahals went off the road and hit a bridge pillar. It's not clear why his SUV went out of control.
A car went upside-down around 1:35 a.m. Thursday near Towne East Square in Wichita. A driver was seriously injured.
Witnesses told police the driver may have been speeding on access roads near Kellogg. The car went over a curb, rolled down a hill into a ditch, and wound up crashing through ice into water in front of the Target store.
"We also located an individual in the car," police Lt. Jeff Gilmore told reporters. "He was able to crawl out of the car." He was transported to a hospital in critical condition.
State troopers say another driver rolled an SUV on K-61 Thursday night, one mile north of Hutchinson. The man from McPherson was flown to Wichita with serious injuries.
