Authorities in Lyon County are working to contain a chemical spill in the Cottonwood River.
KVOE reports the spill was discovered around 1 p.m. Sunday. The spill stretches at least from the Lyon-Chase county line to two miles north of Hartford.
The Emporia and Topeka Hazardous Materials teams have place absorbent booms in the river to try to contain the spill and absorb as much of it as possible.
At the moment, the spill apears to originate in Chase County, but the cause is still being determined.
Emporia City Commissioner Bobbi Mlynar tells KVOE that crews will work "around the clock" to clean up the spill.
