Mail Delivery Delayed As Trucks Struggle To Navigate Snowy Roads

The United States Postal Service's famous line about not letting snow prevent it from delivering the mail got a big test Thursday in Wichita.

Postal Service leaders in Wichita say numerous trucks got stuck heading to the Wichita main plant and then from the Wichita main plant to each city post office.

For example, the last truck of the day traveling from the main plant out by the airport to the downtown post office nearly didn't make it.

"It got stuck six times before it finally got here," said Cindy Liptak, Customer Service Manager for the Wichita Downtown Station post office.

Similar problems for other trucks translated into delayed mail delivery to some areas.

"It's been a challenge," Liptak said. "We've gone to extraordinary measures to get the mail out."

Those extraordinary measures were on display at the post office on N. Oliver where a mail truck got stuck in the parking lot on its way to the post office dock.

"The carriers there formed a human chain and off-loaded it like a fire brigade, one container at a time," Liptak said.

Thanks to those kinds of efforts, Liptak said, most people in the Wichita area should receive their mail Thursday.

But Liptak says there were some areas that carriers couldn't get to because the snow on the street or around the mailbox at the home made it unsafe for carriers to make the delivery. She says that mail should be delivered Friday.

"We feel a responsibility to our customers and we are going to try very hard to get all the mail out today," Liptak said.
