Residents of southern Harper County may have felt a small rumble this afternoon.

The U.S. Geological Survey reports that a magnitude 2.8 earthquake was registered 12 miles south-southeast of Anthony, right on Southeast 90th Road between Southeast 20th and Southeast 30th Avenue. A viewer also contacted us on our Facebook page about the small tremor which they felt in Bluff City.

That portion of the county sits on the Humboldt Fault Line, Which stretches from Omaha, Nebraska down into southern Sumner County. The fault line itself sits along the Nemaha Ridge, which is a buried granite Mountain range that stretches from Omaha down to Oklahoma City.

The strongest registered earthquake to originate in Kansas was the 1867 Manhattan Earthquake which measured 5.1 on the Richter scale, and caused minor damage and injuries.
