Slick Roads Cause Problems For Wichita-Area Drivers

Thursday, January 24, 2013

Slick roads in the Wichita area caused travel problems for drivers Thursday evening.

Freezing drizzle began falling early in the evening, causing numerous accidents on highways in the Wichita area.

Several accidents were reported near I-235 and K-96, injuries of which were minor. The exit from northbound I-235 to K-96 was closed, and traffic was diverted onto Meridian.

A rollover accident was reported just before 7:30 p.m. on eastbound K-96 at Maize Road. Three people involved in that accident were taken to a hospital with potentially serious injuries.

Slick conditions are also to blame for another accident that happened around 9 p.m. on the ramp from southbound I-235 to northbound I-135. That ramp was also shut down. No one in the car was seriously hurt.

The Kansas Highway Patrol says they received numerous reports of slide-offs throughout the evening.

The Kansas Department of Transportation was called out to treat the affected roads.
