WICHITA, Kan. -- Shots were fired at police around 1:30 a.m. Wednesday near the area of 17th and Estelle. This is near Chester Lewis Academic Center and Westmoreland Park.

Officers were dispatched to a shots fired call on North Estelle Street and upon arriving, they found and arrested a 20-year-old man who was getting out of a car with a handgun and alcohol.

As he was being taken into custody for criminal possession of a firearm, five to seven shots were fired at the officers.

Officers immediately took cover and started to secure the area. Five people had to be evacuated from their homes and anyone else in the area was told to shelter in place. Neighbors told KAKE's Deb Farris they heard the shots then dropped to the floor.

There were no injuries as a result of this gunfire.

There was one arrest, but it was for the original disturbance police were called to and not related to the shooting. The shooter is still on the loose.

The area around 17th and Estelle was on lock down for nearly two hours and police are still investigating the scene.
