UPDATE: 11:45 a.m., Thursday, October 17, 2013
The murder suspect who was the subject of a two-week manhunt in Greenwood County is dead.
The Kansas Attorney General's Office said late Wednesday night that Kevin Welsh was killed in a shooting involving Kansas Bureau of Investigation agents.
It happened about 9:30 p.m. last night near 8th and Poplar. According to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, a passing officer noticed the entrance to an unoccupied building had been tampered with since the last time it had been checked. Agents contacted the building's owner and obtained consent to search the structure.
Four to five agents went inside to investigate, and found Kevin Welsh inside. The KBI says he pointed a handgun at the agents, and they shot him. Agents rendered first aid until paramedics arrived and transported him to a Eureka hospital. He was pronounced dead at the hospital 10:11 p.m.
Another group of KBI agents are now on scene completing the investigation. Once that is complete, findings will be turned over to the Greenwood County Attorney. The county attorney will likely appoint a special prosecutor because he's close to the investigation.
Officers had been searching for Welsh for two weeks. His ex-girlfriend, Catherine Scheff, was seriously injured in the October 2 shootings. Her 52-year-old mother, Sheila Kriesel, and her 54-year-old stepfather, Keith Kriesel, were both killed.
