Sedgwick County is investigating why several tornado warning sirens sounded by mistake early today.
Sedgwick County 911 started receiving calls around 2:30 a.m. Sirens in Riverside, College Hill, Downtown Wichita and the Harry & Oliver area all sounded. There were no storm warnings at the time.
"It's possible that lightning can cause power surges that might result in an activation," said Emergency Management Director Randy Duncan.
Patti Conely heard the sirens and checked the tv, but there were no warnings. "I couldn't see anything, so I just prayed and stayed home and held my dog to keep her from going crazy," said Conely
Sedgwick County is currently transitioning the sirens from analog to digital. Duncan says that should cut down on the number of sirens that accidentally go off. The transition is expected to be finished in time for the spring storm season.
