WICHITA, Kan. -- Spring and Summer months are when negligent contractors prey on homeowners, especially seniors. It happens on a near weekly basis.

Some contractors will either take money and never do the work, or do a poor job, leaving the homeowner in a bind.

Consumers are leaving themselves open to fraud when they hire contractors without a contract. these so-called handshake deals are dangerous. It's also important to check references on the contractor you hire and make sure there aren't complaints filed against them.

In Wichita, contractor fraud is very common. As we've reported here on KAKE news, negligent contractors also tend to pop up in hard hit areas after severe weather.

You should always check out the contractor with local agencies before you hire them.
