A Sedgwick County Jail inmate died early Monday morning from chronic medical issues.

Around 12:15 a.m., jail and medical staff responded to a medical emergency in a single-person cell at the Sedgwick County Detention Facility. He was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead shortly before 3 a.m.

He's been identified as 60-year-old Robert Ward Dalen, and he was booked into the jail on June 27 on City of Wichita bench warrants.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation and sheriff's detectives were notified of the death, per policy.

This is the first in-custody death of 2013. Last year, there were two suicides and three deaths related to natural causes at the jail.
