Cleanup work is underway at the site of a grain elevator collapse in Oakley, Kansas. One of the concrete bins of the Frontier Ag elevator collapsed Tuesday afternoon. No one was injured.

A Union Pacific spokesperson said crews are building a 500-foot railroad track to detour trains around the elevator until the structure can be made stable. Union Pacific picked up nine empty train cars that derailed.

Part of a grain elevator has collapsed in Oakley, spilling corn and closing roads in the area.

It happened around 2:20 p.m. at the Frontier Ag elevator, when one of the concrete bins on the southeast corner partially collapsed.

According to an emergency manager, the collapse spilled corn onto a nearby railroad, derailing approximately eight cars on the Union Pacific line. That rail line is temporarily closed.

Everyone in the area has been accounted for and no injuries were reported.

For safety purposes, the area around the elevator has been secured and residents are asked to stay away from the area.

An area resident said it sounded like a jet was flying over when the collapse happened, then the air filled with dust.

We're still gathering information and will update the story as we learn more.
