Wichita, KAN. -- The man calling himself Alex White said he was with Westar Energy telling the person on the other end of the phone line that their electricity would be turned off in 45 minutes if they didn't pay a back due bill.
This week he called some businesses including a liquor store at 13th and West Street, a dry cleaners at 13th and Woodlawn and another liquor store near Pawnee and Hydraulic.
Twilight Liquor Store co-owner Jeremy Dawkins says he thought the call was legit at first.
"I told him I didn't know anything about that," said Dawkins. "As far as I knew it was current and I'd have to check and get back to him."
Dawkins didn't give the man any money but the scam artist did get money from some other victims. The man called from a difficult to trace 800 number.
Police advise that if you get a call like this hang up. You can always call the company like Westar to see if the caller is a scam artist. You should report any scams attempts to the police. And of course don't ever give out credit card or other banking information to someone who calls you on the phone.
