A satirical t-shirt is causing some tension in Old Town. The shirt is making light of the situation in the area, where shots have been fired in the last month.
"We just wanted to bring more awareness to this issue and see if people could come together to resolve it and address what the actual problem is whether it be a specific bar or whether we need more police presence," said Devin Halsey, t-shirt creator.
Statistics provided by Wichita Police, for June 1 to Sept. 12, show no significant increase in aggravated assaults from 2011 to 2012. There were 12 cases of aggravated assault in 2011 and 13 in 2012 for that time period.
Disorderly conduct cases and simple assault numbers, when added together, remained about the same.
There have been 9 robberies over the summer in 2012 compared to 4 in 2011. Additionally, the number one problem continues to be larcenies from vehicles.
"There's no more violence [in Old Town] than in any other neighborhood in the area," said Deputy Chief Tom Stolz. "When people think that's funny or they put it on a sign or they put it on a shirt, it can be very destructive to an area where there's legitimate business and commerce, people living down here, trying to live their lives."
The t-shirt shows two guns in between the words "Old Town" and says "Welcome to Wichita, Duck (profanity)."
The Old Town Association president said he is seeking legal advice on the logo being used on the shirt, while Halsey said his logo is different.
Halsey plans to continue selling the shirts.
