A Salina music teacher is getting a chance to live out his rock & roll fantasy.
Matt Gerry teaches a popular class at Salina South Middle School. Students learn to play the guitar by picking and strumming their way through classic rock songs.
Gerry is a big fan of the alternative rock group Weezer. "As a part of the class, we play a song by Weezer called "Pork & Beans", and the reason we play that song is it's an excellent song for teaching power chords", Gerry said. "One day I was on facebook and there was an ad that said Weezer was having a contest, I said hey, my kids are playing "Pork & Beans" already, why don't I send it in and see what happens". Gerry learned this week his video won a contest. For his prize, Gerry is going to Chicago this weekend to see Weezer play live.
But the band also wanted to do something for the kids who helped Gerry win. "They said they would like to do a live webcast where while i'm with them in Chicago, they want to have all my students back here in Salina in front of a webcam they're going to do a live chat with Weezer and I on one end and the students on the other", Gerry said.
The webcast took place Saturday afternoon. The students had the chance to speak with band members, and saw their teacher hanging out with members of Weezer.
While Gerry is excited to meet the members of one of his favorite bands, he says winning the contest is nothing compared to what he does every day.
The contest was sponsored by State Farm Insurance. For more information, click here
