A Sedgwick County resident is accused of stealing hundreds of dollars worth of electricity from Westar over the course of nearly a year.

Westar Energy reported the theft to the Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office, saying a person living in the 200 block of East 85th Street South stole about $900 worth of electricity.

A meter reader recently found that a hole had been drilled in the meter, and a wire had been inserted to keep it from running. They say it's not the first time this resident has been caught doing this.

An investigation is underway, but so far no arrests have been made.

Editor's note: The Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office erroneously reported earlier that this had been going on since 2006, and that the theft was valued at over $8,000. Westar contacted KAKE News Wednesday afternoon and provided the correct information.
