The number of homeless in the Wichita area has decreased slightly, according to a new report.

The 2012 Sedgwick County Point-In-Time Homeless Count shows 550 people are homeless, down 84 one year ago. Only 75 of those were seeking shelter on the streets, in the park, under bridges or in a car.

The homeless count combines street surveys and an event that was held at Century II. United Way of the Plains coordinated the event.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development requires a homeless count every two years to measure progress in the fight against homelessness.
