As deputies searched the woods near 4th and Kent in Hutchinson Wednesday night, nearby neighbor Ann Warner said she had no idea it was going on right outside her door.
“My neighbor called me, my granddaughter called me so I looked and there were cars and cops all over the place. I thought maybe there had been an accident,” Ann Warner said.
Investigators say around 6:30 Wednesday night, they got several calls to 911 from a hiding in the woods.
“He stated that he had ran from the house where his girlfriend had shot him and he was hiding from her there,” Captain Steve Lutz with the Reno County Sheriff's Office said.
Deputies rushed to the man's home. After they spread out and searched high and low, they finally found him. But they couldn't find his ex-girlfriend, 47-year-old Barbara Youngblood.
They believe she drove away from the house before ditching the car in Hutchinson and running away.
Eventually, Captain Lutz says she contacted a few friends, who then called police.
“She had began to call them back and she was getting a little cold and after being out in the weather and not dressed properly for that long, she was wanting some help and that's how we eventually found out where she was at,” Captain Lutz.
Investigators eventually found Youngblood hiding in the woods near the Hutchinson Correctional Facility. She's still in the hospital being checked out for possible weather related injuries. Her ex-boyfriend is in a Wichita hospital in stable condition.
When Youngblood gets out of the hospital, she will be moved to the Reno County Jail. She faces attempted first degree murder, aggravated burglary, and aggravated robbery charges.
