Some Reno County property owners are facing a big deadline Tuesday afternoon. They either pay their delinquent taxes or face losing the property at a Sheriff's auction.
There were as many as 60 properties set for auction going into the weekend. But Monday many property owners came into the Reno County Courthouse to pay their back taxes at the Treasurer's office.
Reno County Treasurer Clark Miller says residential property has to fall four years behind before its foreclosed on and three years behind on commercial property and empty lots.
Treasurer Miller and clerks in his office hear many sad stories about why people fall behind in property taxes.
Miller says, "A lot of it is.. 'We've just been in the hospital. We let it go. We've been ill.' That's a large part of it. We're out of work."
A Sheriff's property auction is scheduled for Wednesday at 9:AM at Hutchinsons's Memorial Hall, 101 S. Walnut.
