WINFIELD, Kan.-- More than a year after a fire destroyed the playground, Island Park Playground reopens.
"It's bigger and better than the last one, so we're all very, very pleased," said Merrill Gordon, mayor of Winfield.
A fire destroyed the playground in March 2013. That was the second time the playground was intentionally set on fire.
Officials from the Winfield police and fire departments have been working on this investigation but no arrests have been made at this time. The case has now been turned over to the Cowley County attorney for review.
In July 2009, Zach Buhlke was sentenced to two years probation and ordered to pay $6,000 in restitution. Two other juveniles, who pleaded guilty, also received probation for their roles in starting the fire that destroyed the playground for the first time in October 2008.
