The Wichita Transit Advisory Board is proposing a quarter-cent sales tax increase to help fund the public bus system.
Currently the Wichita Transit Authority is a half million dollars in the red and without the tax, director Michael Vinson says the public bus system won't make it.
The board discussed the sales tax issue at its meeting Friday morning stating, "Services provided by Wichita Transit have been in a state of decline for a number of years. At the present time the lack of proper funding has rendered transit services inadequate to meet even the basic needs of the citizens of Wichita who depend on these services to go to and from their employment and to provide for the needs of their families."
The quarter-cent sales tax would bring in about $14 million a year.
The transit board will vote on the proposal on Friday. The Wichita City Council will have to authorize the proposed tax increase to be put to a vote in November of 2012.
A couple of weeks ago, the Transit Authority went before the council asking to shut down several routes and only offer bus service every hour instead of every thirty minutes during peak riding times.
