Property managers and maintenance crews for Ashley Lane Apartments spent the day sifting through every apartment in a building heavily damaged by fire. They were looking for things the people who lived there need the most right now.
“Purses, ID's, bank statements, checkbooks, things like that,” Property manager Mary Allen said.
As they cleared each apartment, anything salvageable was given back to the person who lived there or set aside for them.
“We want to give them as much as we can. We know that they've lost just about everything,” Allen said.
Besides giving back some essentials, like furniture and clothing, property manager Mary Allen says they were able to give a few people back things they thought they had lost but could not replace like family heirlooms, photographs, and even pets.
They found three cats hiding in two different apartments. All three are back with their owners.
The property manager says they are hurrying to clear out what they can from the apartments before mildew sets in. Next, they will be working with the insurance company to come up with a plan on what to do with the rest of the building.
