PRATT, Kan -- A Pratt man has been arrested and charged in the death of his infant daughter.
Joseph D. "Joey" Sponaugle, 27, is charged with first degree murder, child abuse, and child endangerment. A criminal complaint alleges Sponaugle killed a 3-month old between January 11th and 14th.
The child's mother, Brittani Figueroa, confirms that her ex-boyfriend was arrested yesterday for the death of their daughter.
Figueroa rushed to their house on January 11th after Sponaugle said the baby was not breathing. She said Sponaugle claimed he tripped and fell on the baby.
"His stories of him falling on her, which he had five different stories, they didn't add up because she had no external injuries on her body," said Figueroa.
According to the baby's mother, she suffered bruised ribs, a fractured arm, and internal bleeding of the brain on January 11th. The baby was rushed to Pratt Regional Medical Center and then airlifted to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. The baby died on January 14th.
Sponaugle's bond is set at $1 million. He made his first court appearance today. A date for his next court appearance has not yet been set.
