WICHITA, Kan Meals on Wheels will not be delivering food on Friday. An electrical problem at the kitchen disrupted the service.
"When you're serving almost 900 people a day you've got to start cooking by 5:30 or 6 to get the meals out," said Executive Director Laurel Alkire. "So we had to make the call that we would not be able to deliver today."
The only Meals on Wheels that is affected is the one in the Wichita area. Meals on Wheels serves almost 900 people in Wichita by delivering hot meals to homes. The Executive Director says there is a back-up plan in emergencies like this.
"Every winter we send out two shelf stable meals," Alkire said. "It's a box meal with canned meat, crackers, and soup. They are to save those for days like today."
The power was restored after a few hours, but there was not enough time to put meals together for today. Weekend deliveries are still planned, but Monday deliveries will not be made because of Martin Luther King day. Recipients will have a frozen meal for that day.
No food was lost in the power outage.
