WICHITA, Kan.-- More than $600,000 remain unused in the City of Wichita's $1 million Water Conservation Rebate Program.

Nearly 2,500 Wichita water customers submitted a rebate during the program which lasted between June 1st and December 31st.

"We instituted the program as a response to the drought and when the drought ended, there's still obviously a need to conserve water, so we didn't know how much of the million dollars we'd use," said Ben Nelson, strategic services manager for the city's public works and utilities department.

As of today, the city has approved $324,466 in rebates from the $1 million program. An additional $68,200 is made available to wholesale customers, communities that buy water from Wichita, to offer their own rebate programs.

A total of 3,439 items were rebated and included toilets, dishwashers, clothes washers, rain barrels, and smart irrigation sensors.

Nelson said the department wants to develop a permanent water conservation program. It is unclear whether or not the rebate program will re-start this year. Ideas for water conservation strategies will be presented to the City Council in Spring 2014.

Customers who bought eligible appliances by December 31st have 90 days from the date of purchase to apply for a rebate. Final numbers for the rebate program will be available in late March.
