Pompeo on issues one week before vote

Stay up-to-date with KAKE News:

Wichita, Kan. --- The real battle for the Kansas Fourth District congressional seat is not expected to be decided in November but in next Tuesday's Republican Primary. It's been 20 years since a democrat's held that seat.

The 4th district race is turning out to be quite the mudslinger with political ads which aren't passing fact checks.

KAKE news is asking both candidates responses to some of the issues most relevant to Kansas.

Todd Tiahrt's political ads accuse Pompeo of voting against the KC-46 tanker and money to prepare McConnell to receive them. To that Pompeo says, "I never voted against them. My goodness, who would?" "It's a crazy, goofy notion run by a crazy, goofy campaign, frankly, that has made these assertions that everyone who's evaluated them has proven false."

Pompeo on the subject of the N.S.A.'s eavesdropping and privacy:
"Mr. Tiahrt's claims have been proven misleading. Everybody who's fact checked it have said his claims are false. That's a pretty consistent theme. We can do the things we need to do to keep American's safe and our soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines safe as well while protecting American's privacy.

On the subject of Kansas energy exploration and the method of fracturing or fracking, for short, to extract oil:

"We have this glorious opportunity in Kansas and America to become energy independent for the 1st time in a long time. Fracking, a process in drilling, is a part of that."

"There's not a single incident in which ground water has been contaminated by an operator producing natural gas. I know we can create this affordable energy which will bring jobs back to Kansas, good high paying manufacturing jobs, If the government will just behave in a way consistent with clean air and safe drinking water while producing the affordable energy that we need all across the state."

On the subject of gridlock in the capitol:

"Americans have widely divergent views. You see that played out in Washington, D.C. What really has to happen is you have to have leaders. The most frustrating thing I've seen is this president refusing to lead on so many of the important issues of the day. Barack Obama is just fundamentally disengaged from the political process."

Join us tomorrow after we interview former Congressman Todd Tiahrt. The primary is August 5th.
