Wichita Man Killed In Shootout With Officers

Local law enforcement agencies have identified a Wichita man as a suspect who died after a carjacking and shootout with officers.

It happened near Yoder Road and Parallel Road about two miles north of Cheney Reservoir around 1:30 p.m. Monday.

Reno County authorities said Darren Baker, 52, got out of a car and started shooting at officers. He died in a gunfire exchange.

Officials said he was wanted for a car jacking in the 2500 block of West Douglas just after Noon. He then led officers on a chase through west Sedgwick county and into Reno County.

According the Kansas Department of Corrections, Baker had served time for driving under the influence and other drug-releated charges.
He was released in March of 2005.

A man who officials say carjacked a vehicle and led officers on a chase through two counties was killed in a shootout with law enforcement officers. Investigators say it started with a report of a carjacking in the 2500 block of West Douglas Avenue just after noon Monday.

A Wichita police officer later spotted the suspect making a traffic violation and attempted to pull him over. The suspect refused and a chase ensued.

Officers from multiple law enforcement agencies followed the suspect into Reno County to the intersection of Yoder Road and Parallel Road about two miles north of Cheney Reservoir. Investigators say the suspect stopped the car and got out. He then started shooting at officers and the officers returned fire. Officials say the suspect was shot and killed by officers. No officers were hurt.

The suspects name has not been released. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation has taken charge of the investigation.

A police chase has ended with shots fired in Reno County. 911 dispatchers tell KAKE News the driver shot himself.

Wichita Police were chasing a vehicle after a report of a carjacking at 2510 W. Douglas at 12:19 p.m.

The chase continued in Western Sedgwick County and ended at 3800 Parallel Road, south of Yoder, in Reno County.
