WICHITA, Kan. -- Police are investigating a house fire and a shooting at the same northeast Wichita residence.
Officers were originally called around 4:15 Saturday morning to a shooting in the 1300 block of North Pershing, near 13th and Oliver. As they were heading to the scene, calls came in about a house fire at the same residence.
Sgt. Kevin Kochenderfer said that when officers arrived, they found a 27-year-old man who had been shot in the thigh, as well as the home engulfed in flames. There were about 10 people inside.
"There were numerous people that the officers had to help...to get out of the basement," Kochenderfer said.
The homeowner said that the fire was intentionally set from the outside; someone threw multiple Molotov Cocktails through the front and rear windows.
Fire investigators confirm that the home was destroyed by incendiary devices and damage is estimated at $30,000 to the structure and contents. The homeowner has been put up in a hotel provided by the Red Cross.
The shooting victim was taken to a nearby hospital in stable condition. He was coherent and able to speak with police and EMS. Several others were treated for smoke inhalation. No names have been released.
There is a person of interest police are looking for, but no details were released on a description.
