UPDATE: Monday, September 10, 2012
Wichita Police have arrested the mother of an 11-year-old after he disappeared for more than 24-hours.
Chance Smith, who lives with his 45-year-old mother at a hotel in the 2200 block of S. Broadway, had not been seen since Friday when he and his younger sister missed the school bus. Authorities said he walked his sister to her nearby school, but failed to walk to his school about three miles away.
Police said he spent the day with friends, instead.
The school later notified the child's mother of his absence. She believed her son had run away, so she did not notify police until later Friday evening.
Investigators began searching for Smith, but were unable to find him, and his mother did not know the names of any of his friends.
Smith was reported safe after he showed up at his mother's hotel room around 4 p.m. Saturday, shortly before police were planning on holding a media briefing.
His mother was arrested a short time later for child endangerment. Both children are now in police protective custody.
