WICHITA, Kan. -- A man was hospitalized in critical condition after Wichita police say he was shot at and then stabbed while trying to talk to his ex-girlfriend. It started around 3 a.m. Saturday at a house in the 2600 block of North Poplar.
Police say the 32-year-old victim went to the home after his ex-girlfriend called him over to visit. While there, the victim was confronted by a 33-year-old man who allegedly fired several shots at him with a shotgun. The victim was able to get into his car and drive away without getting hurt but his car was damaged by the shotgun pellets.
About half a hour later, police say the victim returned to the home after getting another call from the ex-girlfriend. He was again confronted by the suspect who allegedly stabbed him in the shoulder with a knife. A three-inch length of the knife blade broke off in the victim's back. Police say the victim then defended himself by hitting the suspect in the face.
The victim was taken to a local hospital in critical condition. Police say the knife blade is still lodged in his back and doctors aren't sure whether it can be removed.
The suspect suffered minor facial injuries. Police say they know his identity but he has not yet been arrested.
The case is under investigation.
