WICHITA, Kan. — Wichita Police say a young boy is in protective custody after his mother told officers that she no longer wanted him.

According to police, a woman left her 3-year-old boy with her roommate near Hillside and Ross Parkway around 5 p.m. Tuesday. When she hadn't returned by 11 p.m., the 34-year-old man took the boy to the Patrol West substation and told officers he couldn't take care of him.

Officers then contacted the 27-year-old mother, who wouldn't pick him up and reportedly told them she no longer wanted the boy. He was then placed into protective custody.

Police say the man did the right thing by bringing the child to the station. Abandonment charges are possible against the boy's mother.
