Wichita Police believe a baby that had been found dead in an east Wichita dumpster had been stillborn.
Early last week, a 17-year-old was admitted to an area hospital with significant hemorrhaging. She later told hospital staff that she had delivered a baby girl at home on January 10.
She told them the baby was already dead and that she thew the body away in the trash at her home. An unknowing family member had then taken all of the trash to a shopping center dumpster, since the house did not have trash service.
The hospital notified police, and officers found the baby's body around 11 p.m. last Wednesday night in a dumpster at the Eastgate Shopping Mall, located at 8125 E. Kellogg.
Police say that only she and her 18-year-old boyfriend knew about the pregnancy, and that the child was likely stillborn.
She has since been released from the hospital while police continue to investigate.
