Wichita Police have arrested a man who reportedly followed a student walking to school Thursday.
It happened Thursday morning as a girl, whose age has not been released, was walking alone to Gordon Parks Academy, located in the 2200 block of East 25th St. North.
She told police a man she didn't know pulled up next to her in a silver truck and asked if she wanted a ride. She declined, which angered the man. He then began following her while yelling at her.
When the girl arrived at Gordon Parks, the man began yelling at other students who were outside while she went in and reported the incident to school officials. They called police but the man was already gone when they arrived.
The girl gave officers a description of the man and his truck. That afternoon, police found a truck matching the description near the school and arrested the 34-year-old driver on an unrelated warrant.
Police are investigating.
Letter sent to Gordon Parks Academy parents;
Dear Gordon Parks Academy Parents and Guardians,
The safety of our students is our top priority. We had some students report to me that they were approached by a stranger in a truck who said some inappropriate things. The students did the right thing
by getting away from the person and telling school administration. We contacted the Wichita Police Department who is currently investigating. The students describe the truck as a silver Ford F150, so please be aware of any suspicious person driving that type of vehicle.
We want your children to be safe. If your children walk to school, they should walk with a friend if at all possible. This would be a great time for you to review with your child the rules about “stranger danger”, including running away, making noise to draw attention to yourself, going to a safe place and telling an
adult about what happened. Also remind them never to accept rides from anyone they don’t know.
I want to thank you for your continued support of Gordon Parks Academy.
