A Wichita man entered a plea in a deadly stabbing as his murder trial was scheduled to begin. Christopher Cervantes pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and aggravated battery in the January, 2012, death of Bradley Wellbrock.
The incident happened in the 2500 block of West Wildwood. Police said Wellbrock saw a couple arguing and stepped in to break it up. That's when officers said eight to ten people jumped Wellbrock.
During this morning's hearing, Cervantes told Judge Greg Waller that he felt scared and vulnerable, but admitted he stabbed Wellbrock with a pocket knife.
Voluntary manslaughter is defined as a killing committed in the heat of passion or upon a sudden quarrel or a killing done upon an unreasonable, but honest belief that circumstances existed that justified deadly force.
Cervantes will be sentenced on April 24. Depending on his criminal history, he could face a maximum of about 20 years in prison.
