HILLSBORO, Kan. Kansas Highway Patrol troopers said the pilot of an ultralight plane was killed in a crash in Marion County today. The KHP identified the pilot as former Kansas Representative Donald Dahl.
Officials say the plane went down in a pond just before 1:45 p.m. about two miles south of Hillsboro. Investigators said it hit a tree branch, then hit the ground next to the pond and flipped. It came to rest upside down in the pond.
Dahl, 69, was the only person on board.
The accident is under investigation.
Dahl served in the Kansas House from 1997 to 2008.
Kansas Governor Sam Brownback issued the following statement on the passing of former Representative Donald Dahl.
"I am greatly saddened to hear of Donald Dahl's passing today. He had a proud legacy of public service. A veteran of the U.S. Navy, he served the people of Kansas as a representative for six terms and was a member of the Kansas Supreme Court Nominating Commission. The Lt. Governor and I extend our personal sympathy to his family and friends."
