Wichita, Kan. -- A United Express jet has made an emergency landing in Wichita after a mechanical problem left the pilot unable to make left turns.

It began shortly before 7 p.m. Monday when the plane was about 50 miles outside of Wichita. The pilot contacted air traffic control at Mid-Continent Airport in Wichita reporting the problem and the need to land the aircraft.

Airport Fire and Police Captain Marty DesMarteau tells KAKE News that that one of the jet's ailerons had failed and the plane could no longer make left turns. The jet had left Shreveport, La. and was bound for Denver.

The plane landed safely shortly after 7 p.m. and was able to taxi to the terminal. The airline is working with the 39 passengers who were on board, to get them to their final destination.
