A tip to South Hutchinson police led Reno County Sheriff's deputies to a burglary suspect.
The Sheriff's Office announced the arrest of Rusty Bryant of Hutchinson Wednesday. The recent parolee now faces several burglary and theft charges in connection with a string of burglaries near Prairie Dunes County Club the first week of July.
People who live there say the burglaries are a reminder not to let their guard down at home.
"I think it's really opened peoples' eyes to what can happen," said Kyle Philbeck, who lives in the neighborhood where several items were stolen from cars and garages earlier this month.
The security of home can cause even the most careful property owners to drop their guard. It was that sense of security someone was waiting to take advantage of.
"Most of the stuff was from vehicles, so we're talking purses, wallets, sunglasses, GPS units, stuff like that," said Reno County Undersheriff Sheldon Stewart. "If you're going to park your car in the garage, it'd be wise to lock it as well. Double security."
According to records from the Kansas Department of Corrections, Bryant, the man arrested on suspicion of burglary and theft, was paroled in March after serving a sentence on a 2009 burglary conviction in Reno County.
He is charged with one count of aggravated burglary, nine counts of residential burglary, three counts of felony theft, seven counts of misdemeanor theft and seven counts of possession of stolen property. Bond for Bryant has been set at $15,000.
Those who live near Prairie Dunes say, regardless of whether Bryant is responsible for the burglaries in their neighborhood, they have received a valuable reminder not to take their quiet community for granted.
"My husband and I moved here from Atlanta about six years ago," Philbeck said. "So we've always kept everything locked up really tight. We were really lucky that we didn't have anything happen to our property."
The sheriff's office is still looking into the cases to determine whether there may be more suspects.
"Experience tells us in these cases that, most of the time, there are other people involved," Stewart said.
Anybody with information that can help investigators is asked to call Reno County Crime Stoppers at 620-694-2666 or the Reno County Sheriff's Office at 620-694-2735.
