A dispute over stolen property led to a deadly shooting over the weekend, police said.

It happened near 44th St. South and Broadway early Saturday morning. Emergency crews arrived at the scene to find the victim suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

Robert Gammon, 49, was taken to a nearby hospital were he later died.

Investigators said that neighbors had been fighting for at least a day over stolen gas and a possible stolen minibike. Police were not notified about the dispute until the shooting.

Authorities said a 32-year-old man has been arrested for second-degree murder in connection to the shooting death.

UPDATE: Saturday, May 19, 2012

Family members have identified the victim as 49-year-old Robert Gammon. The family said this could be connected to an earlier disagreement.

"Nobody should've died over gas," said Josh Powers, friend of the family.

Powers and the victim's son, Shelby Gammon, said they were in a confrontation with the possible suspects hours before the shooting.

"I feel like it's my fault that his dad did die. It has to be a misunderstanding 'cause what he's mad about is that supposedly took gas out of his gas tank," said Powers.

The two had been riding their dirt bikes in the neighborhood when there was a disagreement with nearby neighbors.

"Something about gas getting siphoned out of his vehicle and his dad's vehicle. I mean, I don't know anything of it. That's why I wasn't trying to have any part of it," said Shelby Gammon.

At about midnight, the son heard noises outside their home in the 100 block of E. 44th St. South.

"Like any other person, when somebody comes on their property, you have a weapon to let them know you don't want them on your property," said the victim's wife, Roberta Gammon.

The three men then chased the intruders off the property.

"I ran up on them and they pulled the gun on me. Then, my dad and friend, Josh, came running up. They seen that gun was pointed at me. So, my dad stepped in and they just shot him," said Gammon's son.

When officers arrived, they found Robert Gammon, 49, with four gunshot wounds to his head and body.

"We're looking at possible connections to some disagreement earlier but again we're still early into it. Like any investigation, we look at all possible leads," said Deputy Chief Nelson Mosley of the Wichita Police Department.

While police continue their investigation, Gammon's four children mourn the loss of their father and Gammon's wife of 24 years mourns the loss of her husband.

"Now I have to finish raising my 21-year-old son by myself because they took my husband and it's not fair," said Gammon's wife.

A man is dead after a shooting in South Wichita overnight. The victim is identified only as a 49-year-old man. It happened in the 100 block of East 44th Street South just before 1 a.m.

Deputy Chief Nelson Mosley said neighbors in the area called police to report they had heard gunshots. When officers arrived, they discovered a man with multiple gunshot wounds.

Police said multiple witnesses were taken downtown for questioning, but no arrest had been made as of early Saturday morning.

"The victim in this case heard some noise outside his residence," Mosley said. "Once he heard it, he and two others went to investigate. They confronted some individuals in the back breezeway area and then shots were fired."

Mosley also said detectives are looking into a possible disagreement earlier in the night that preceded the shooting.
