Police said a speeding car may have led to an deadly accident at a southeast Wichita intersection. It happened at Mount Vernon and Edgemoor around 8:15 p.m. Tuesday.

Witnesses described an 18-year-old man driving west at speeds of 65 to 70 miles per hour, when he broadsided a northbound car. The posted speed limit at the intersection is 35 mph.

Lt. Joe Schroeder, Wichita Police, said the driver of the northbound car, a 27-year-old woman, may not have come to a complete stop at a stop sign. Schroeder said the driver may have also misjudged the extreme speed of the speeding car.

"If a vehicle is traveling double the posted speed limit, it is very difficult for that driver to determine, based on a quick one second look, to determine how fast that vehicle's moving," Schroeder said.

Six-year-old Feodora Two-Hatchett died at the scene. Her mother was treated for injuries at a hospital, as well as her other 1 year-old daughter sitting in the back seat. The driver of the speeding car was not injured, but his 15 year-old passenger was slightly hurt.

The accident remains under investigation. No arrests have been made.

A memorial fund has been established to help the family with funeral expenses. Donations can be sent to:
