Neighbors are in shock after police say a woman who lived at 2200 E. 53rd Street in southeast Wichita shot and killed her husband before attempting to kill herself.
"It has bothered me tremendously," neighbor Ethel Adams said.
Adams went out to get the mail Wednesday night and says she had one of those feelings, almost like someone was speaking to her.
"All the sudden (I felt) I really need to stop and say hi to her and see how things are," Adams said.
Adams hadn't seen the neighbor in a while. So, she almost listened to that voice telling her to walk across the street and knock on the door to see her.
"But it was later (in the evening) and we don't just go knocking on neighbors around here unless we call them," Adams said.
So, she didn't walk over there. It's a decision she says she questions but one that also may have saved her life.
"That could have been God's way of keeping me away," Adams said.
That's because minutes later, other neighbors heard the shots.
"I heard popping noises like it was fireworks, my dogs started barking, the the next thing I knew police were everywhere," neighbor Katherine Woodworth said.
Police had just received a call from a man who said his daughter had just called him to say she had killed her husband and was about to kill herself.
"Officers responded to the residence and upon trying to make contact at the front door, they heard a gunshot from inside the residence," Lt. Todd Ojile of the Wichita Police Department said.
Officers say they forced their way inside to find a 38-year-old man dead in the living room. When the got to the back bedrooms, they found the 37-year-old woman with a single gunshot to her chest. She was taken to Wesley Medical Center in critical condition.
"It appears there was some sort of argument in the house, we believe the female shot the male numerous times," Ojile said.
Neighbors say the couple did argue from time to time but nothing like this.
Police say there is no history of domestic violence between the couple.
"It's a big shock and a big mystery," Adams said.
It's a big mystery that features questions about the crime and questions Adams and other neighbors have for themselves. But neighbors say only God may have many of the answers.
"It's affecting all of us, every one of us," Adams said.
